Vertebral Hydatid Cyst: A Case Report

BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus. The reported occurrence bony hydatidosis 0.5–3% all cases and 50% them affect spine. Nevertheless, lumbar vertebral involvement extremely rare. most common dorsal level. CASE REPORT: We present case a 32-year-old-military dog handler, who presented in 2018 to urology department with an abdominal retroperitoneal mass. MRI showed multilocular cystic lesions. patient underwent surgery, cysts were removed. anatomopathological evaluation concluded hydatic cysts. He was briefly relieved from his symptoms. addressed our 2020 suffering lumbar-radicular pain functional impotence both lower limbs. performed showing multiple big inhomogeneous contents. CT scan destruction l5 vertebra. surgery. Initially, we through posterior approach, L4 S1 laminectomy, stabilization, then total L5 corpectomy, anterior l4-s1 fusion xipho-pubic laparotomy after 2 months. Antihelminthic therapy administrated. patient’s symptoms completely disappeared. No signs reoccurrence noted at 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSION: primary extrahepatic echinococcosis bone rare disease. Diagnosis can be long difficult. It lead serious complications should highly considered lesion endemic region. Spinal but potentially curable surgery anthelmintic drug therapy.
